To Visit Vargas House at Vatolla, Convents
History The origin of the name seems to go back to the end of the XI century, when the inhabitants of the village near the convent of St. Arcangelo moved to the valley, where a stream flows. It was therefore the geographical conformation to determine the new name of the village "pes de fluming" that is "at the foot of the river".
The village was one of the baronage of Cilento under the Principality of the Sanseverinos.
Gianbattista Vico, a well-known philosopher, lived in Vatolla from 1686 to 1695 and was given the task of tutor of the castle's household.
Here he wrote one of his famous works "La scienza nuova".
Perdifumo became "comune", together with Camella, Mercato Cilento and Vatolla, in 1806 after the abolition of feudality in southern Italy.
